We’re at it again with another science experiment – this time we’re trying the Walking Water Experiment. Before you begin, this fun and colorful experiment takes time and patience so let the kiddos know that they won’t see an immediate result. Note: cheaper brands of paper towels work better vs. ones that are more absorbent.
What You’ll Need:
* 5 clear plastic cups or glasses
* Water
* 3 different shades of food coloring
* 1 straw
* 4 paper towels (you can cut 2 full-size paper towels in half or if you have the select-a-size paper towels, use 4 half sheets)
Instructions:
To begin, pour water in every other cup, with the two outside cups having a little less water than the middle cup. Place several drops of food coloring in each cup of water and stir with the straw to mix. Watch the Walking Water Experiment video to see the colors we chose.
Next, take a paper towel and fold it lengthwise in half, then in half again, and then fold it over. Trim the ends to fit into the glass. You will need to do this with 4 paper towels and once you’re finished, connect each glass with a paper towel.
Let sit for at least 2 hours, then check out the results! Kids will be excited to see that the water has “walked” along the paper towels and into the empty glass, creating a new color in the process! It works best with primary colors: red and yellow make orange, yellow and blue make green. But, we used what we had at home, thus our yellow and green make a lighter shade of green.
