A recent study published in the Journal of Pediatrics links soda drinking to aggressive behavior in young children. The study found that 5-year-olds who drank four servings or more of soda daily were more than twice as likely to destroy other kids’ things and start fights compared with those who drank no soda. The study, by Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, the University of Vermont and the Harvard School of Public Health, assessed approximately 3,000 5-year-olds enrolled in the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study funded by the U.S. National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. 43 percent of the kids consumed at least one serving of a soda per day, as reported by the mothers who also completed a behavior checklist for their kids. Even after adjusting for other factors, the researchers found soda consumption to be associated with increased aggression, withdrawal and attention problems.
