Your child may just change his mind about monsters upon setting sights on this adorable art project from This craft is great for kids ages 6 to 8.

What You’ll Need:

• Rocks

• Washable liquid tempera paint (1 pint)

• Glue

• Toothpicks

• Assorted paint brushes

• Colorful crinkle strips or yarn

• Thin-line markers

• Safety scissors

• Googly eyes

• Old toothbrush (optional)

Here’s How:

1. Wash rocks with warm, soapy water. If the rock has nooks and crannies, use an old toothbrush to get all the dirt out, then dry the rock with a paper towel or old towel.

2. Pick the main color for the monster’s “body” and paint the entire rock that color. Let it dry completely before going on to the next step.

3. Have your child paint the monster’s mouth with black paint and let it dry completely before going on to step 4, which is optional. You can also use a black marker to draw in a mouth.

4. Use a toothpick and white paint to paint pointy teeth on the black mouth.

5. Dot on eyes with white paint. Using a toothpick, your child can add black or red dots for the eyeballs after the white paint has dried. Or, glue on googly eyes and let dry.

6. Use the handle end of a paintbrush to dot on spots.

7. Want to add eyebrows? Use a black marker, or a toothpick and black paint.

8. Cut crinkle strips or yarn into pieces a half-inch long.

9. Add some glue to the top of the rock monster’s “head” and spread it out with a finger.

10. Place the crinkle strips or yarn pieces (standing up) on top of the glue. Let it dry completely.
