You won’t be able to pirouette around town this month without running into a performance of The Nutcracker. Countless ballet companies in our area perform the show, several 2016 performances are listed below.
* Boston Ballet’s The Nutcracker, Nov. 25 – Dec. 31, varying dates and times, Boston Opera House, 539 Washington St., Boston. Mikko Nissinen’s version of the holiday ballet is a magical world of colorful characters, breathtaking costumes and majestic scenery. $35 and up. 617-695-6955;

* Jose Mateo Ballet Theatre’s Nutcracker, Nov. 25 – Dec. 18, Cutler Majestic Theatre; 219 Tremont St., Boston and The Strand Theatre, 543 Columbia Road, Dorchester. With over 200 local children dancing, this is the only pro production in the area to hold open auditions. * Urban Nutcracker, Dec. 16-31, varying dates and times, John Hancock Hall, 180 Berkeley St., Boston. Anthony Williams’ Urban Nutcracker fuses Tchaikovsky’s classic score with Duke Ellington’s jazz interpretation. * Dancing Arts Center’s The Nutcracker, Dec. 17-18, Norwood Theatre, 109 Central St., Norwood.
