MORNING CLASSES 9:00am - 12:00pm
Ages 8 to 12: Acting Through Song
Songs in a musical are meant to advance the plot. Even when an actor/actress is singing, they are still acting. Students will learn the importance of staying in character during a song and the techniques used to ensure that not only the plot is moved forward, but the character’s journey is advanced as well.
Ages 13 to 18: Voice and Dialects for the Stage
Vocal techniques are important for an actor’s toolbox. In this class, students will learn the proper vocal techniques to be heard and understood, while also learning the common dialects used on stage.
AFTERNOON CLASSES 12:30pm - 3:30pm
Ages 8 to 12: Building Stage Characters
Like real life, each character in a musical has a unique quality. This class will focus on creating distinctive characters that are unforgettable. Using vocal and movement techniques, students will gain the necessary tools to build dynamic characters for the stage.
Ages 13 to 18: Acting Through Song/Audition Techniques
Songs in a musical are meant to advance the plot and fill in the story. Even when an actor/actress is singing, they are still acting. These skills also translate to a musical theater audition setting. In this class students will learn demonstrated techniques used on stage and in an audition, emphasizing the importance of acting and staying in character throughout a song. Students will select and analyze songs, learn the perfect audition slate and practice the above skills necessary to shine on stage and ace an audition.

AFTERNOON CLASSES 12:30pm - 3:30pm
Ages 8 to 12: Improv for the Stage
Anything can happen in Live theatre, be prepared! In this class, students will learn the importance of improvisation in acting to build deeper characters, auditioning and being present on stage. Through games and other improv exercises, students will build their ability to think quickly on their feet and engage with their scene partner in a more meaningful way.
Ages 13 to 18: Believable Transitions: Scene into Song
Transitions in a musical are an art form. Working with various scenes, students will learn the art of transitioning from a scene into a song and back again and the subtle ways in which they can make it more believable for the audience. Through scene analysis students will understand why transitions happen at certain points in a musical and their importance of moving the plot forward.
At NSMT, we believe that a modern day actor should have a toolbox filled with true and steadfast techniques and methods used on the stage. Our conservatory style program concentrates on providing students the necessary tools to become a triple threat and well-rounded actor/actress. Students will hone their skills in acting, singing and dancing, while engaging with their peers, building on the areas critical to their development such as: critical thinking, collaboration, public speaking, time management and social development. We also believe that theatre should be accessible to any student who chooses to participate and encourage them to begin their artistic journey, regardless of their level of experience.
