Custom Math Tutor: Help or Enrichment for Any Age/Level/Learning Style
Sharon F. – Custom Math Tutor
Are you looking for programs to keep your child learning over the summer?
Through individual online math lessons & activities, I can help students to solidify skills and concepts from the past year, get ready for the upcoming year, or explore math for fun.
I have over 40 years of experience in the field of education, as a teacher and tutor (elementary school through high school) and as a curriculum developer. I have a BA in math from Harvard University and a MEd from the University of New Hampshire, with a double concentration in elementary education and secondary math education. I hold MA certification for secondary math (Gr. 7-12) and elementary ed (K-6).
My math tutoring runs the full gamut from remedial work to extension work, from pre-K through pre-college, and from basic number and visual skills through pre-calculus. I love tutoring because it gives me an opportunity to design a customized program and approach to meet each student’s unique learning style and content needs. My emphasis is on careful diagnosis to identify and address any gaps or weaknesses in prior knowledge, on building a strong understanding of concepts and WHY procedures work, and on fostering a student’s self-confidence and self-reliance. I make use of exploratory activities, graphic organizers, hands-on materials, visual models and diagrams, real-world applications, technology, games, and more, as appropriate.
I have extensive background in developing problem-solving ability - for struggling students, for those seeking to excel at math competitions, and for anyone in between. I have also done a lot of work designing and implementing activities to help students learn to communicate mathematical ideas more effectively. In addition, I can provide enrichment and challenge activities to stretch students’ understanding and help them experience the joy and excitement of math.
As an elementary school teacher, I have also taught writing skills (including spelling) and creative writing, and I have led literature discussion groups. In my many years as a homeroom teacher and advisor, I have gained extensive experience in helping students develop effective study skills and organizational strategies.
“Wonderful Math Tutor”
Sudbury, MA June 2020
Sharon has been tutoring my son for seven years. The instruction he had been receiving at his school was very uneven. I picked Sharon because she had an undergraduate degree in math and had taught in elementary, middle, and high school. Sharon understands that one size does not fit all. Children approach math problems in different ways. Sharon is very comfortable with this. She is more than patient. She is encouraging and in this way my son has found the math confidence he needs. What I particularly appreciate is her ability to teach math through real life situations, making it more than just a series of procedures, and always relevant. She comes prepared, knows what she wants to hit, but she is incredibly flexible. You can ask her to cover anything. She doesn’t need to go home and prepare a new lesson because she knows math. We have found her to be easy to work with, and worth every penny.
Highly recommend her.
Great Math Tutor
Sharon is an extraordinary and dedicated math teacher and tutor. She tutored my child in middle school math, including Algebra 1, and then tutored her to prepare for the math SAT and for a community college math placement test. While my child liked math and always had an aptitude for it, she had a different learning style than most students in her class as well as other challenges. Unfortunately, school extra support was not enough, so we hired Sharon to tutor and coach her. Sharon was able to create and teach lessons that aligned with my child's learning style, so this enabled her to better access the curriculum standards as well as boosting her confidence. Sharon kept my child engaged and was able to kindly guide her through moments of distraction and anxiety. Without this personalized, one-on-one intervention, I think my daughter would have given up on math. Instead she flourished and retained her interest in math and her belief in her own abilities. Sharon was a great help to my son from 8th - 12th grade. He had always struggled with math but she was able to explain things to him in a way that he understood. She met him wherever he was at when she arrived, whether it was working on homework or preparing for a test. Sometimes, because she is good at thinking ahead and knows what comes next with the math curriculum, the sessions were spent preparing for future class work. Summers were spent getting ready for whatever class he was taking in the fall. Sharon often stayed longer than the planned time until she felt he understood the concept and could do the work. But at the same time, she also was tuned into his needs and knew when to not push him; she gave him breaks when she could see his energy fading. Sharon is extremely patient and found multiple ways to explain things to help him understand. I can't recommend Sharon enough. She's an excellent tutor.
I've been working with Sharon for the past three years on math competition and extension work beyond my math classes in school, and my problem solving abilities have greatly improved from her help. She focuses on making sure I thoroughly understand the concepts I'm learning about, often using visuals to help illustrate them, and she has shown me how to apply these concepts to unfamiliar problems. She's very knowledgable, and I would highly recommend working with her.
