On Monday, January 20, Many Helping Hands 365, along with representatives from other city agencies, will lead more than a thousand community volunteers in projects to benefit the homeless, homebound elderly, and children and families in honor Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy. Projects will take place at the Cambridge Senior Center, the YWCA and City Hall from 2-5pm. A brief welcome gathering for this year's MLK Day of Service will take place on the steps of City Hall at 2pm and will include remarks by Professor Jonathon Walton, Plummer Professor and Pusey Minister of Memorial Church, Harvard University.

Volunteers can register in advance at www.manyhelpinghands365.org.

In just three hours, local volunteers of all ages will extend a hand to Cambridge residents in need. They make fleece blankets for children at Cambridge’s family shelters and homeless adults found sleeping outdoors; bookmarks for The Literacy Project at Cambridge Public Library and the Community Learning Center; Valentine’s Day cards for elders served by Meals-on-Wheels as well as Cambridge veterans and military personnel; and activity kits for the children of families visiting the city’s emergency waiting. Thanks to generous Cambridge hotels, volunteers will also assemble toiletries kits for people served by the city’s domestic violence and homeless shelters.

Volunteers are asked to “not come empty handed” and donate items such as winter children’s clothing for Cambridge Children's Clothing Exchange; adult winter clothing for CASPAR, On the Rise and the Harvard Square Homeless Shelter; non-perishable food donations for Cambridge’s food pantries; and children’s books to the city’s Youth Centers and literacy programs.
