Most parents can homeschool
After homeschooling with my daughter for the past 6 years, I think that most families can homeschool. The question is whether they want to, and are willing to dedicate the time and energy to it. There are many resources, and sources of support. There are also many opportunities for social contact and learning with other families - classes, co-ops, informal gatherings, etc.. Some students in middle and high school can go to school part-time, learn at home part time, or supplement with community college or online courses. There are many choices.

Studies show that homeschoolers excel academically whether or not they also attend "mainstream educational facilities" (http://www.hslda.org/docs/news/200908100.asp).
I would also say that while maybe 90% of parents do not consider homeschooling, it is not because they are incapable of it. Most parents could homeschool if they chose to. Very few would not be able to for reasons such as the parent's own health. Single parents and families where both parents work also manage to homeschool if they so choose. The above study shows that the parents' income and educational level have little impact on the child's educational success in a homeschool situation.

More Resources Needed
Thanks for this nod to homeschooling wisdom. I would add a great resource: home education magazine and website and Association of Home Education in Massachusetts website.
